LANSING, MI (AP)-- A dozen Native American tribes in Michigan will get a share of nearly $14 million for affordable housing.
The announcement of Indian Housing Block Grant allocations comes Wednesday from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The funds primarily benefit low-income families living on Indian reservations or in other American Indian communities. The amount of each grant is based on a formula that considers local needs and housing units under management by the tribe or designated entity.
Funding includes about $4.8 million for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, $2.2 million for the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, $1.8 million for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and $1.2 million for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
