New life for Marquette orphanage building in the works

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   A Detroit-area development company is planning to turn the long-deserted

Marquette orphanage into affordable housing for veterans and families with low and moderate incomes.

Home Renewal Systems LLC of Farmington Hills is calling the project Grandview Marquette.  The $15 million project would be financed partly with federal low-income housing and historic rehabilitation credits.

The 75,000 square-foot building would be renovated into a 56-unit complex with one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Monthly rental rates could range between $240 and $825.

The Marquette Diocese operated Holy Family Orphanage from 1915 to 1965. The last residents were a group of refugee children from Cuba after the Castro-led revolution.  The building served as office space until 1982.
