Kingsford mail center granted temporary reprieve

KINGSFORD, MI--   The U.S. Postal Service mail processing center in Kingsford will stay open through the end of the year.

The center was previously scheduled to have its mail sorting operations moved to Green Bay in July.

Postal Service officials say the decision to postpone the next phase of the consolidation initiative was based on operational considerations.  They say prompt, reliable, and predictable service consistent with published service standards will continue.  Planned consolidation activities will resume in 2016.

Congressman Dan Benishek is applauding the decision.  He says, “This facility not only provides jobs to families in the Upper Peninsula, it also is critical to ensuring that rural communities receive their mail in a timely fashion.  With so much waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending, I know that there are better places to cut than basic, key services like the delivery of mail.”
