FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The Houghton County Memorial Airport is getting a grant worth about $856,000 to help with rehab work at the Upper Peninsula facility.
The office of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow said in a news release Thursday that the money will go toward rehabilitating the concrete of the airport's apron, which is where aircraft are parked. The funds come from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Stabenow said in the news release that the grant will go toward making travel to the Upper Peninsula "safer and more efficient." U.S. Sen. Gary Peters said in the release that it will encourage economic growth in the area.
The airport is located in Franklin Township, near Houghton.
