Limited off-road vehicle use allowed at Bewabic State Park

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Off-road vehicle users now have permission to ride onto the grounds of Bewabic State Park in the Upper Peninsula's Iron County.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Keith Creagh says ORV use will be allowed only for loading and unloading the vehicles or for riding them from designated parking areas and campsites to trail networks.

Bewabic is the fifth Michigan state park where ORV use has been approved since 2009.

Recreation specialist Rob Katona says the DNR manages use of the vehicles in ways that prevent disturbance of campers and other park visitors.

Creagh announced his decision Thursday during a meeting of the Natural Resources Commission in Lansing. He said it would boost U.P. tourism.

The commission also approved early-season regulations for hunting migratory birds, including Canada geese and teal.
