Skeleton found at Marquette beach belonged to horse, officials say

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

MARQUETTE, MI--   Department of Natural Resources officials say bones found by a boy near Picnic Rocks in Marquette last week are from a horse, not a moose.

The remains of a skeleton were unearthed from the sand Thursday and bagged by police.  Initial reports said the bones came from a moose, but DNR biologist Brian Roell says the skull has upper incisors and is the more heavily built skull of a horse.  He says it was probably buried long ago and unearthed by recent high water levels.

Biologists will dispose of the bones.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
