Upper Peninsula rolling out system to respond to 911 texts

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI (AP)--   The Upper Peninsula is rolling out a system to allow people to text 911 in an emergency.

The Daily News of Iron Mountain reports that starting Monday people in the U.P. will be able to send a text message to 911.

Dickinson County Sheriff Scott Celello announced the update along with the Upper Peninsula 911 Authority, which includes all counties in the U.P.

Celello says calling and speaking with a dispatcher remains the best way of reaching emergency services, but he notes that's not always an option.

Those texting 911 are asked to send brief messages without using abbreviations or slang. Parts of the Lower Peninsula earlier got text-to-911 service.
