SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan-based American Indian tribe is among eight that will receive federal grants to boost their educational programs and develop initiatives for achieving self-determination.
The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians was awarded $300,000 by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Interior. Altogether, $2.5 million in grants were announced this week during the annual White House Tribal Nations Conference in Washington, D.C.
Bureau of Indian Education Director Charles Roessel says tribes chosen for the funding are setting high academic standards and incorporating tribal culture, language and history into their curricula.
