Grants available for Iron Belle Trail improvements

LANSING, MI (AP)--   State officials say a second round of grant funding is available for communities and organizations working on parts of Michigan's two Iron Belle Trail routes.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says proposals are due January 8.

Engineering and design assistance, construction project assistance and purchase of Iron Belle signs are eligible for funding.

A total of $350,000 will be divided among grants that could be as much as $30,000. A match is not required but is highly recommended.

Michigan's Iron Belle Trail reaches from Belle Isle Park in Detroit to Ironwood in the western Upper Peninsula. It features two distinct routes for hiking and bicycling that together will cover 2,000 scenic miles. Portions remain under development.
