LANSING, MI (AP)-- The state is distributing grants totaling $135,000 to 23 animal shelters in Michigan, including two in the Upper Peninsula.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced Thursday the money being given out by its Animal Industry Division was donated by state taxpayers using a check-off option. Since 2010, the Animal Welfare Fund has distributed more than $967,000.
The Chippewa County Animal Control Shelter has received $2,000, while UPAWS in Marquette County has been given $7,000.
The funds seek to increase the number of adoptions through spay and neuter programs; improve staff knowledge of proper animal care through educational programs and training; and assist shelters with unreimbursed costs of care for animals housed for legal investigations.
The state says notable projects include a public education campaign on pet care as well as a variety of in-school programs.
