Strong winds cut electrical service to Cloverland customers

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   High winds knocked out power to thousands of Cloverland Electric Cooperative customers in the Eastern U.P. Wednesday.

Officials say the outages started around 3:45 a.m., affecting at least 6,800 services.

As of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday an estimated 2,900 customers in Chippewa, Delta, Luce, Mackinac, and Schoolcraft Counties still had no electricity.  Cloverland officials said those who didn’t have power by 8 p.m. should consider making alternate plans for the night.

As of 6:15 a.m. Thursday 1,117 residences were still in the dark.

Power may not be restored to all customers until sometime Thursday.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
