WI Assembly Speaker wants to review request for voter ID outreach money

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he wants to review state elections officials' request for money to educate the public about Wisconsin's voter photo identification law.
The Government Accountability Board plans to ask lawmakers for $250,000 to re-start an education campaign it dropped in 2012 after a legal challenge put the requirements on hold. The mandate is now back in effect.
Vos said in a statement Wednesday that he supports educating the public but wants to review the request to ensure the money would be well-spent. He added, however, the state has had to spend taxpayer dollars to defend the law from the same groups now calling for education.
Rep. John Nygren, one of the budget committee's co-chairs, issued a statement Wednesday that he looks forward to seriously considering the request.
