Postal food drive takes place Saturday

MARQUETTE, MI--   Saturday marks the 24th annual National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.

Every year on the second Saturday in May letter carriers collect non-perishable food items from residents.  They go directly to local food pantries to assist hungry neighbors.

Officials say the timing of the food drive is critical.  Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations around Thanksgiving and Christmas.  By spring their shelves are bare, just at the time when many school breakfast and lunch programs aren’t available for children in need.

To donate just leave non-perishable items in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday, May 14 and your letter carrier will pick it up.

Last year postal carriers collected over 71 million pounds of food nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people.
