MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Officials are investigating the cause of a house fire on South Vandenboom Street in Marquette Township.

Firefighters were called to the residence Monday just before 4 p.m.  Four fire departments responded to the scene.  Department of Natural Resources firefighters also responded when flames from the house ignited extremely dry brush in the nearby woods.  High winds fanned the fire into a two-acre swath.

No one was home when the fire broke out.  Two dogs were removed safely from the house, which is considered to be a total loss.

At the scene were officials from the Marquette Township Fire Department, Chocolay Township Fire Department, Negaunee Township Fire Department, the DNR, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette County Rescue 131, and the Red Cross.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
