MONTPELIER, VT (AP)-- Lawyers from Vermont's Prisoners' Rights Office plan to travel to Michigan this weekend to investigate a series of incidents in a prison there that houses Vermont inmates.
Defender General Matt Valerio says the incidents unfolded May 25, when several Vermont inmates at the North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin, Michigan, acted out in response to a series of cell searches by prison personnel looking for contraband including weapons.
Mike Touchette, the state Corrections Department's director of facility operations, says the department is reviewing reports about the incidents. He says there's no indication coming from those reviews so far that any prison staff behaved improperly.
Vermont currently houses 236 inmates at the Michigan facility, which is owned by a private prison operator, GEO Group.
