Stamp Out Hunger sets collection record

MARQUETTE, MI--   A record 17,000 pounds of food was collected in Marquette County during this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

On May 14th letter carriers picked up nonperishable items left by mailboxes and brought them back to post offices to be divided up.  The food was then distributed to St. Vincent DePaul, the Salvation Army, Harbor House, and the Janzen House to help fill their dwindling pantries.

Larry Kuhn of the Marquette Post Office says workers were pleased at the amount of participation this year.  He says the Negaunee/Ishpeming area alone donated 10,000 pounds of food.

Officials say the need for food across the county has increased with economic conditions, and agencies welcome food and monetary donations any time of year to help them serve a growing number of clients.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is an effort by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United Way of Marquette County.
