Hiawatha fire closes roads

MUNISING, MI--   Some roads within the Hiawatha National Forest are closed while officials continue fire suppression efforts.

On Wednesday a fire was detected on remote forest land north of Trout Lake and west of M-123.  Two Forest roads have been temporarily closed to assist wildland firefighting activity.  Forest road 3145 (also called Wilwin Road) is closed between M-123 and H-40, and Forest road 3343 is closed at M-123.

The fire spread to about 35 acres in size, but high relative humidity and rain have helped firefighters in their containment efforts.

Jon Agner, Fire Management Officer for Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests, is reminding the public to be very careful with campfires, and that fireworks are always prohibited on National Forest lands.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
