Officials: twister appeared in Monday thunderstorms

GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI--   Michigan State Police say a tornado touched down during severe thunderstorms in Gogebic County Monday night.

Officials say a low-end EF-1 twister formed three miles south of Bessemer.  Winds around 90 miles per hour downed trees and power lines and resulted in some structural damage.

Gogebic County remains under a state of emergency due to flash flooding and washed out roads, including Lake Road at Little Girls Point.  Emergency personnel are checking to see that every resident in that area is accounted for and safe.

Sunday Lake is closed because debris washed into the lake has made the water potentially dangerous, and the Gogebic County Road Commission is working to fix roads where pavement has been washed away.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, and local fire departments are assisting in rescue and cleanup efforts.
