Harbor House gets upgrades through Lowe's grant

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has given more than $18,000 to the Marquette Women’s Center for its domestic violence shelter.

The Lowe’s Community Partners grant will be used for kitchen repair and remodeling at the Harbor House, which can accommodate up to 14 residents.

Women’s Center Executive Director Beth Casady says when the Harbor House relocated to Baraga Avenue in 1997 immediate upgrades were needed to make a single-family home more suitable for a multiple-family space.  Continuous use over the years wore out the kitchen, but a lack of money meant no replacements could be installed.

With Lowe’s support the Women’s Center has been able to update the kitchen to 2016 standards.  Old appliances have been replaced with energy efficient models, allowing the Women’s Center to potentially reduce its energy consumption while maximizing storage capacity.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
