Power restored to more residents affected by storm

MARQUETTE, MI--   UPPCO says fewer than 500 customers remained without power Tuesday night, following Monday’s severe storm and Tuesday’s snowfall.

Around 50 field employees and 50 contractors from other utilities have been working to restore electricity nearly round the clock, but heavy snow hampered efforts to replace a number of utility poles damaged by 70- to 80-mile-per-hour straight-line winds that whipped through Marquette and Iron counties early Monday morning. The majority of the customers without power are in Republic and the greater Ishpeming area.

UPPCO is reminding residents that falling trees or limbs may have damaged electric service equipment they own, like their meter. UPPCO can’t reconnect service until the damaged equipment is repaired by a licensed electrician.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
