Bicyclists should stay away from Escanaba River bridge work, MDOT says

ESCANABA, MI--   The Michigan Department of Transportation is urging bicyclists to use extreme caution around construction at the Escanaba River Bridge on US-2 in Wells Township.

MDOT is replacing both the US-2 bridge over the river and the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad bridge over US-2. In an effort to improve safety for non-motorized traffic traveling across the bridge, MDOT suggests bicyclists use the following route: US-2 to County Road 426, then County Road 420 to County Road 531, and M-35 back to US-2.

Bicyclists who decide to travel through the work zone should follow the “same road, same rules, same rights” motto. There is no shoulder in the work zone, so cyclists should stop, wait for a gap in traffic, and enter the travel lane in the same direction as motor vehicles.
