Number of fatal Fourth of July crashes down this year

LANSING, MI--   Michigan State Police say fewer people died over this year’s Independence Day weekend than in 2016.

Preliminary findings indicate 11 people lost their lives in 11 separate crashes during the 2017 Fourth of July holiday weekend. That’s down from 13 fatalities last year.

Troopers say of the 11 crashes, alcohol was a known factor in three; four involved motorcycles (a helmet wasn’t worn in one of the accidents and it’s unknown if a helmet was used in the other three); two of the deadly crashes involved off-road vehicles; and one victim was on a bicycle.

This year’s Fourth of July holiday weekend ran from Saturday, July 1 at 12:01 a.m. through Tuesday, July 4 at 11:59 p.m.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
