ESCANABA, MI-- Officials are holding a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for Delta County’s new correctional facility project in Escanaba.
Overcrowding has been a problem at the current jail for years. The county secured a $17.9 million loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the next 30 years at a maximum interest rate of 3.25 percent. They note a public bond sale will no longer be required, which means residents may save up to $2 million in interest costs. The loan will also allow the county to save up to $250,000 in bond offering costs.
The new Sheriff’s Office and 160-bed jail will be built on the site of the current Delta County Service Center. Indiana-based security consulting firm Securitecture is the architect on the project.
The groundbreaking takes place at 1 p.m. at the Service Center.
