Manistique Police initiate drug dog program

wiseGeek

MANISTIQUE, MI--   The Manistique Public Safety Department is setting up a new K-9 Narcotics Detection Dog program.

Officials decided to get a drug-sniffing dog based on the success of a similar program in Schoolcraft County.

The new K-9 officer in Manistique will be Craig Jankowski, who started a campaign to raise the initial $18,000 needed for the dog, training, and equipment. The program received $5,000 from Lodge 146 of the Fraternal Order of Police. The remainder was donated by Lakeshore Oil Company of Manistique.

The dog will be a male German Shepherd that will be trained in narcotics detection, search and rescue, and officer protection. It will also have a personality that will allow Officer Jankowski to bring him to public programs in the community and schools.

The program should be up and running this fall.
