National Beach Safety Week aims to inform the public

MARQUETTE, MI--   The City of Marquette, Marquette Township, and Chocolay Township have designated this week as National Beach Safety Week.

Officials say they want citizens to be safe in and near the water, and be aware of the hazards of rip currents. They say beachgoers should learn to swim; should swim near a lifeguard and with a buddy; they need to obey posted signs and flags; learn rip current safety; and enter water feet first.

Officials say the water rescue response capabilities of all three jurisdictions and lifesaving equipment stations—along with Marquette lifeguards—are provided in an effort to reduce the number of accidents at beaches.  But they say they can’t do the job alone. An informed public is essential to maintaining adequate levels of beach and water safety.
