LANSING, MI-- More than a dozen wildland firefighters from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources have been sent west to help crews battle massive blazes.
Three firefighters have taken an engine to help fight the vast and still raging Carr fire in Northern California.
Dan Laux is fire section manager for the DNR’s Forest Resources Division. He’s been mobilizing resources to battle fires in Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho.
Assistance agreements are reciprocal. If a significant fire occurs in Michigan, firefighters from other states and Canadian provinces can be tapped for help.
The Carr fire has burned more than 100,000 acres to date and has caused six deaths. Last week officials there put out a national request for fire engines, and Michigan sent a truck from the Gladwin unit.
