Drivers need to be careful around children when school starts, MSP says

MARQUETTE, MI--   In a couple of weeks schools will be full of kids, which means drivers need to be extra careful on the roads.

Michigan State Police are reminding motorists how to drive around school buses. If you see yellow caution lights activated you are required to slow down and stop, if able. Red lights require you to stop at least 20 feet from the bus and stay there until the lights are shut off.

Kids don’t always pay attention to vehicles passing by, and those who are playing games outside could inadvertently find themselves in the roadway. Drivers should be aware of intersections and school crossing areas. Troopers say they should also be aware of reduced speed zones near schools during certain days and hours.

And authorities remind drivers to slow down in bad weather and during times of reduced visibility.
