MARQUETTE, MI-- WNMU-TV is moving frequencies next week and some viewers will have to rescan their televisions to get the PBS station.
Broadcast Manager Bob Thomson says television went digital in 2016. That opened up room on the radio spectrum because digital signals take up less space than analog. The FCC ordered some stations to move to a different frequency so high-speed wireless services could use the new space.
Thomson says WNMU-TV has a new transmitter and antenna to accommodate the change to channel 8 on July 1, but viewers who use an antenna will have to rescan their t-vs. He says the station will go to low power on Monday. That will produce some outages, but everything should be in place Wednesday at 11 a.m.
“That’s when they’ll be able to rescan their TV, and we’ll pop right back up like normal. We’ll have probably more reliable transmitter service and antenna service, but everything else should be just the same. So they have to rescan their TV,” he says.
Thomson says those unsure of how to rescan their TV should consult the owner’s manual.
Viewers who get WNMU-TV on cable or satellite won’t have to do a thing.
Those who have questions about the process are urged to call WNMU-TV at 800-227-9668.
