Marquette opens first permanent homeless shelter

MARQUETTE, MI--   Room at the Inn and the Lake Superior Community Partnership recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Marquette’s first permanent emergency homeless shelter.

Part of the first floor and all of the second floor of Room at the Inn’s Warming Center on Washington Street has been remodeled to provide overnight sleeping facilities for 30 homeless individuals. Renovations also include a new bathroom on the second floor, the demolition of the enclosed porch and the construction of a new emergency exit stairway.

RATI operates the shelter between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. The facility is staffed overnight by a supervisor and community volunteers.

Should RATI exceed the 30-bed capacity, the dining area in the Warming Center will be used. Officials note the shelter will take in more than

30 people only in the winter months.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
