Firefighters still trying to contain Isle Royale blaze

National Park Service

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI--   A wildfire on Isle Royale is about 20-percent contained.

Officials say firefighters working to control the 200-acre Horne Fire include 22 from the National Park Service, eight from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and 21 from Virginia.

Due to the progress of the Horne Fire, ongoing drought conditions, and elevated levels of fire danger, some areas of the park remain closed to the public.

All park areas are closed to the lighting and maintaining of wood fires. Charcoal fires are only allowed in grills at Rock Harbor, Windigo and Mott Island. Self-contained gas, propane, alcohol, and twig stoves are allowed.
