Power lines ripped down in Negaunee Township

WLUC-TV

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Electricity was knocked out to residents in an area of Negaunee Township for several hours Tuesday, after an oversized load caught power lines along M-35.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says a semi-truck and trailer was southbound on M-35 around 1:30 p.m. when it struck low-hanging telephone and cable lines near the Jarvi Road intersection.  The truck dragged the lines, snapping two power poles along the roadway.

The high-voltage cables draped over the driver’s load, preventing him from exiting his cab until utility workers shut off the electricity.

Power was down and traffic was re-routed around the crash scene for about 5 ½ hours.  Neither the truck nor its load of wind generator equipment were damaged in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
