Boy saved from ice floe in Soo

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   Authorities say a 14-year old boy has been rescued from an ice floe at a marina in Sault Ste. Marie.

A U.S. Coast Guard crew and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection boat team responded Sunday afternoon to George Kemp Downtown Marina in the Soo.  The boy was reported to be drifting on an ice floe about 20 feet from shore.  The Customs and Border Protection team was conducting training in the area, and threw a rope to the boy to prevent him from drifting further.  The Coast Guard picked him up shortly afterward.

Officials say the boy was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, since air temperatures were relatively warm.  The water temperature was 34 degrees.

The boy was taken to War Memorial Hospital as a precaution.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
