Autopsy reveals Keweenaw vacationer's cause of death

SHERMAN TOWNSHIP, MI--   Authorities in the Keweenaw say drowning is the apparent cause of death of a 48-year-old camper from suburban Detroit whose body was pulled from Lake Superior.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office says Paul F. Lempke of Eastpointe disappeared about 11 p.m. Thursday from the Kauppi Resort and Campground in Sherman Township.

Authorities say they recovered his body Friday afternoon. They say Lempke was camping with a friend and was last seen walking along a break wall near the docks at the resort.

Sheriff Ron Lahti tells The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton that an autopsy shows Lempke probably drowned, but a final report on the cause of death is upcoming.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
