NMU professor dies while skiing

MARQUETTE, MI--   A member of the Northern Michigan University community has died unexpectedly.

Marquette Police were called to the Fit Strip off of Lincoln Avenue Sunday around 4:50 p.m. and found an unresponsive cross-country skier on the trail.

The victim has been identified as John Anderton, 49, a professor in the Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences department.

Officers and emergency services personnel tried to revive Anderton at the scene.  He was taken to Marquette General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

NMU officials say Anderton was a well-respected teacher, scholar and student advocate.  He was also an avid cross-country skier.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
