Close call in Delta County after dynamite truck hit

GARDEN TOWNSHIP, MI--   A portion of US-2 in Delta County was closed briefly Tuesday when a truck loaded with dynamite was rear-ended.

Sheriff’s deputies say the crash happened at 9:33 a.m. just east of M-183 in Garden Township.  An eastbound truck driven by Erik Somirs, 60, of Long Lane, Missouri had slowed to make a left turn into the Garden Rest Stop when a second semi driven by William Watson, 59, of Hawks, Michigan hit it from behind.

Somirs’ truck, which was loaded with 40,000 pounds of dynamite, sustained only minor damage.  Watson had to be extricated from the cab of his truck, which was empty.

Officials closed US-2 to allow Valley Med Flight to land and airlift Watson to Upper Peninsula Health System Marquette.  His condition is unknown.  Somirs was not injured.
