People rescued from ice off Marquette waters

MARQUETTE, MI--   Recent higher temperatures produced a scary situation for two people who found themselves stranded on ice on Presque Isle’s Middle Bay.

The Marquette City Fire Department was called Thursday around 6:35 p.m. on a report the victims were on float ice about 500 yards from shore.  They were surrounded by water and moving north.

The Coast Guard and firefighters carried an inflatable raft to the ice shelf, then deployed it about 100 yards across the water to the victims.  The two people were loaded onto the raft and taken back to the ice shelf, where officials helped them back to shore.

No one was injured in the incident.

Fire officials say ice in and around the city is unstable and residents should stay off.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
