Newfoundland death triggers air bag probes in U.S, Canada

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   Auto safety investigators in two countries may have a new air bag problem to deal with.

Investigators in the U.S. and Canada are looking into whether the death of a Canadian driver was caused by a

faulty air bag inflator made by ARC Automotive Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn.

As many as 8 million air bags are under scrutiny in the U.S. mainly in older cars. The problem is different than the one that resulted in the recall of 69 million inflators made by Takata Corp.

Authorities say the driver was killed when an ARC inflator ruptured in a crash in Newfoundland and sent shrapnel into a 2009 Hyundai Elantra.
