KEWEENAW PENINSULA, MI--   State Police say the body of a third boater who went missing during a fishing trip on Lake Superior near Chassell has been recovered.

The victim, Steven Chartre, 43, of Ishpeming, was recovered Tuesday by staff from the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City and the Michigan Technological University research vessel Agassiz.  A remotely operated vehicle was used to recover Chartre in about 280 feet of water near the sunken boat in Keweenaw Bay.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the boat to sink.

Volunteer groups Bruce’s Legacy and Crossman consulting located the vessel using sonar on Saturday.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post assisted at the scene Tuesday.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
