Missing boaters found

U.S. Coast Guard

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI--    Three boaters who went missing during a fishing trip in the Keweenaw have been found.

State Police from the Calumet Post say on Saturday, October 1 around 12:45 p.m. two volunteer search and rescue organizations found the sunken boat using sonar.  Keith Karvonen, 61, and Ethan Chartre, 9, were located and recovered from Lake Superior.  Steven Chartre, 43, was also located. Additional resources are enroute to assist in his recovery.

The three left Chassell to go fishing September 17 but didn’t return that evening.  Coast Guard crews from the U.S. and Canada searched more than 14,000 square miles but suspended the search four days later.

Volunteer groups Bruce’s Legacy of Black River Falls, Wisconsin and Crossman Consulting of Duluth, Minnesota were assisted in the recovery by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, troopers from the Calumet Post, Mercy Ambulance, and the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
