Natural gas fire in L'Anse cuts service to customers

L'ANSE, MI--   L’Anse residents may be without heat for several days, following a natural gas fire early Friday morning.

The Baraga County Sheriff’s Department says around 3:45 a vehicle ran off of US-41 west of L’Anse Avenue.  The vehicle struck a SEMCO gas line, which ignited the sub-station.  Firefighters say the fire burned out of control for a time, but the flames have been brought under control as of 10 a.m.

The accident remains under investigation.

SEMCO officials say natural gas customers in the L’Anse area could be without gas for up to three days.  That affects about 1,200 customers.

Warming centers are being set up in the Baraga school, Ojibwa College, and the Big Bucks Bingo Hall.
