MARQUETTE, MI--   A Michigan Tech student from Marquette County died of hypothermia Saturday morning while on a hiking trip 17 miles north of Ishpeming.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says the 19-year-old man was one of six 19- to 20-year-old Tech students camping in the woods near Rocking Chair Lake.  The unnamed man went looking for firewood in the early morning but didn’t return. After searching for him for more than 30 minutes, his friends located the missing man, who was wet and cold. Officials say they built a fire to warm him up, and when he seemed to improve, brought him back to base camp; however, the campers say the man quickly showed signs of severe hypothermia and they even performed CPR on him.

The students called 911 when they found cell reception on a bluff around 4:30 a.m. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene around 8 a.m.

The victim was later pronounced dead.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
