Man extricated from vehicle after Houghton County crash

CHASSELL, MI--   Two people were taken to the hospital, following a two-vehicle crash in Houghton County Thursday.

The Sheriff’s Office was called around 6:15 p.m. to the intersection of Paradise and Massie roads. Deputies say a southbound vehicle driven by Ken Kaiponen, 85, of Chassell tried to make a left turn onto Massie road and hit a northbound vehicle driven by Alexis Williamson, 20, of Chassell.

Hurontown Fire and Rescue had to extricate Kaiponen from his Dodge Caravan with the Jaws of Life. Both he and Williamson were taken to UPHS Portage for treatment of their injuries. Seat belts were worn by both drivers.

The accident remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
