ODANAH, WI (AP)-- The National Transportation Safety Board and local officials say a helicopter crash in northern Wisconsin has killed the pilot, the only person on board.
The Ashland County Sheriff's Office says the crashed Enbridge helicopter was discovered about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in a remote area of the Bad River Indian Reservation. It had apparently taken off from the Upper Peninsula.
Numerous agencies had been looking for the chopper since it failed to arrive at Duluth International Airport early Monday afternoon for a brief stop before going onto its destination in Madison. It had apparently taken off from the Upper Peninsula. Searches of local airports failed to turn up the missing aircraft.
Sheriff's officials say air searchers spotted the crash helicopter near Odanah.
Ground teams, including an Enbridge search team, reached the crash site about 6 a.m. The FAA says the pilot was on pipeline patrol when he went down. The pilot has not been identified.
