Four taken to hospital following weekend crash in Portage Township

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Several people were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Houghton County on Saturday.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened around 7:20 p.m. on US-41 just north of Denton Road in Portage Township.

An 89-year-old Mohawk man attempted to turn north onto the highway from a private driveway when he pulled in front of a vehicle driven by a 35-year-old Hancock woman.

One of the woman’s two daughters had to be extricated from the vehicle by Hurontown Fire and Rescue.

All four people involved were taken to UPHS-Portage for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The 89-year-old driver was cited for failing to yield leaving a private driveway.

The highway was shut down for about an hour while officials cleared the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
