Telephone pole impales car, injures two in Marquette Township

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Two people were seriously injured when their vehicle hit a telephone pole in Marquette Township Monday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 4:10 p.m. on County Road 550 near Eagles Nest Road. A Ford Taurus driven by a 32-year-old Marquette man was southbound when the driver took his eyes off the road and reached for food. The vehicle hit gravel, the driver overcorrected and lost control of the car. It crossed the centerline, left the road and hit a telephone pole, which impaled the vehicle.

Two passengers, a 25-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, sustained serious injuries. The man had to be extricated from the wreckage. The driver sustained minor injuries.

Deputies say neither speed, alcohol nor other intoxicating substances were factors in the crash.

The driver was cited for driving on a suspended license, causing serious injuries.
