Swimmer rescued after spending 4 days in Lake Superior near the Keweenaw

KEWEENAW COUNTY, MI--   A Wisconsin man is hospitalized after he floated in Lake Superior off the Keweenaw Peninsula for several days.

Kayakers notified the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office on Monday afternoon that they’d found a man floating near High Rock Point at the tip of the peninsula. The 35-year-old man from Milwaukee County had been reported missing on August 3rd.

Authorities say the unnamed man had stopped at Hebard Park west of Copper Harbor to go swimming, but a strong current pulled him 15 miles east to the Gull Rock Lighthouse, situated between the tip of the Keweenaw and Manitou Island. He spent a day on the island before trying to swim back to the Keweenaw. That’s when kayakers near High Rock Point spotted him and called police.

First responders from Copper Harbor took the man to Horseshoe Harbor, where an ambulance transported him to Aspirus Keweenaw. The man was later airlifted to UPHS-Marquette for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

The incident remains under investigation.
