Two rescued from Lake Superior by Coast Guard and Keweenaw deputies

KEWEENAW COUNTY, MI— A boater and a kayaker had to be rescued from Lake Superior off the Keweenaw Friday morning because of high waves and engine problems.

Keweenaw Report says a 58-year-old man and 62-year-old woman set out from Lac LaBelle Thursday in an 18-foot boat. The woman decided to take the kayak out on the water. She was forced to beach the kayak near the mouth of Hoar Creek at Big Bay, and spent the night there without shelter.

Engine problems disabled the boat. It drifted into Keystone Bay, became grounded, then partially submerged due to heavy waves.

Rescuers from Coast Guard Station Portage and the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office were dispatched Friday around 9:30 a.m. They located the pair and brought them to a patrol boat on the county’s personal watercraft.

They were eventually brought back to their vehicle at Lac LaBelle.
