Woman killed in Schoolcraft County snowmobile accident

SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY, MI— A downstate woman died from injuries sustained in a snowmobile crash in Schoolcraft County Thursday.

Around 2:45 p.m., Michigan State Police from the Manistique Outpost and Gladstone Post were dispatched to Trail #413 near Camp 7 Road.

They say Alain Davis, 46, of Charlotte was driving eastbound when she reached a “Y” in the trail, where the trail continued north. Davis was unable to negotiate the curve and lost control of the snowmobile, which struck several small tree stumps sticking out of the snow. Davis was ejected and hit a tree at a high rate of speed.

Troopers, Commercial Motor Vehicle officers, Manistique Public Safety officers, Inwood Fire and Rescue personnel, Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s deputies, and Guardian Flight responded began lifesaving measures, but Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was traveling with her husband, who was on a snowmobile near her when the crash occurred.

Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the crash.

The accident followed another snowmobile crash in Schoolcraft County earlier in the day where a male subject was traveling too fast for trail conditions. He suffered a broken leg.

Officials say always ride within your limits.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
