DETROIT, MI— A freighter hauling salt through the Great Lakes ran aground in the Detroit River Wednesday, causing a spectacle just off the shore of a popular island park.
Freighters regularly travel the waterway, but they rarely come so close to land, so the sudden arrival of the Mark W. Barker turned heads at Detroit's Belle Isle State Park.
The U.S. Coast Guard says the freighter got stuck around 8 a.m. but was freed by a tugboat around four hours later.
There have been no reports of injuries, pollution, or damage to the hull.
