Driver and passenger taken to hospital following crash on M-553

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI— Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on M-553 in Sands Township Wednesday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 2:15 p.m. to the intersection with Kelly Johnson Memorial Drive. Deputies say a southbound Ford Edge was stopped and waiting to turn east onto Kelly Johnson Memorial Drive when it was rear-ended by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Ford rolled onto its side and the Jeep came to rest on the shoulder of M-553.

The driver of the Jeep, a Gwinn woman, was treated at the scene, ticketed, and released. The driver and passenger of the Ford, two Gwinn residents, were taken to UPHS-Marquette and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, Sands Township Fire and EMS, various citizens, and Heavy Hooker Towing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
